Akamai wins $11.6B Anthropic cloud-computing pact

Cloud-computing company Akamai Technologies has secured a seven-year, $11.6 billion contract with Anthropic, paired with a warrant that could give the AI company up to a 5% equity stake. The agreement will see Akamai provide Anthropic access to central processing units for its data centers, and follows a previous $1.8 billion cloud deal between the companies earlier this year. The equity warrant is the first of its kind for Akamai, but "helps bring the companies together," says CEO and co-founder Tom Leighton.

Riding high on AI chip demand, AMD passes $1T market cap

Advanced Micro Devices surged past the $1 trillion market-cap threshold in intraday trading on Monday, becoming the latest AI chipmaker to reach the elite trillion-dollar club. AMD stock is riding a five-day hot streak, and its share price has almost tripled this year. AMD chip engineer Chitra Barvekar posted on LinkedIn that "strong execution, real demand, and a growing role in the future of AI" helped the company reach the milestone. AMD is the fourth chipmaker to cross the trillion-dollar mark, following Nvidia, Broadcom and Micron.

Oura targets $2.2B in US listing for smart rings

Oura, the Finnish maker of health-tracking smart rings, plans to raise up to $2.2 billion in an initial public offering, according to a Monday filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. An IPO at that price would value the company — which has sold millions of rings and counts over five million paying subscribers — as high as $14.1 billion. Despite growing revenue, Oura's losses surpassed $900 million in the last year. Its Nasdaq listing is seen as a test of investor appetite for wearables.

Diesel tops $6.50 to set new record as energy shocks grow

U.S. diesel prices topped $6.50 for the first time on Monday, with the war in Iran straining supplies and threatening further inflation. Prices have surged more than 87 cents in September, according to AAA, with consequences for the broader economy, since diesel powers everything from shipping to farming to manufacturing. Meanwhile, energy markets are also suffering from an unexpected issue — the cost of operating tankers has risen 12-fold in the last year to over $1 million a day. "The price of shipping tells the story," notes NCCapital's Adam Hanafi.

Paramount in $1.5B talks with Calif. to finalize merger

Paramount is discussing a settlement with California's attorney general that includes a $1.5 billion investment in the state and a promise not to leave, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing unnamed sources. Multiple states have sued to stop Paramount's $81 billion merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, and advanced talks have included a promise not to sell either studio lot, as well as the installation of a board to maintain CNN's independence. If Paramount fails to honor a pledge to release 30 movies a year, it could be forced to sell its stake in Miramax.

Dream-RSI: Recursive Self-Improvement through Evolving Worlds

Recursive self-improvement is becoming increasingly vital for autonomous AI agents, where progress hinges on discovering high-value solutions across complex domains. The driver of this process is effective exploration, however, managing and improving exploration strategies remains a major bottleneck. Current systems face a fundamental dilemma: fixed strategies fail to adapt as search spaces scale, while online policy optimization requires navigating vast meta-search spaces under delayed and expensive feedback over long-horizon rollouts. We introduce \textsc{Dream-RSI}, a framework for...

Accurate Models of AMD Matrix Cores

Matrix multipliers available on recent GPUs do not conform with the IEEE 754 floating point standard. Features of matrix multipliers differ across vendors and architectures of the same vendor, such as accumulator width, rounding behaviour, normalisation points, intermediate underflow and overflow logic, the handling of subnormals, and the treatment of special inputs. As a result, reproducibility of small matrix multiplier results across devices is not possible and cannot be achieved by software control. Implementation details of matrix multipliers are not documented, making it difficult to...
