SpaceX sends Starship rocket into orbit for first time ever

A crucial day for SpaceX: Elon Musk's aerospace outfit launched Starship early Monday, getting the rocket into orbit for the first time. The test flight — Starship's 14th overall — could prove vital to SpaceX's future, which the company is building in large part around Starlink, its biggest and only profitable business. The launch carried more than two dozen new Starlink V3 satellites into space. Last month, Musk said, "It’s not out of the question that at some point, Starlink will deliver a majority of the world’s internet."

TikTok strikes $300M deal to end child safety case

Alabama and TikTok reached an out-of-court settlement, resolving a child-safety case days before a scheduled trial. "Jury selection was set to begin on Monday," reporter Madeline Hughes writes on LinkedIn. Terms stipulate that TikTok must pay Alabama at least $100 million — a sum that could grow to $300 million should other states strike similar deals with the company. TikTok must also implement certain changes to protect teens. At least 27 other states have sued TikTok over its impact on minors; Alabama is the first of them to settle.

Nvidia unveils AI security push, boosts share buyback by $150B

Nvidia on Monday debuted a new artificial intelligence security system meant to stop agents from going off-task. The Open Agent Safety Platform consists of two open-source tools, OpenShell and Sentry, that can "quarantine a suspicious agent in milliseconds," said Justin Boitano, who leads Nvidia's enterprise AI efforts. In a LinkedIn post, CEO Jensen Huang declared, "This is... the beginning of an open ecosystem to build the trust layer for safe agent systems." Also Monday, Nvidia expanded its share buyback program by $150 billion, setting a new record.

US and China agree to $60B tariffs deal

A three-day summit between the U.S. and China concluded with an agreement between the two nations to reduce reciprocal tariffs on about $30 billion of imports from each country, reported Bloomberg, which said the deal "was one of the most tangible outcomes of Xi’s state visit to Washington." Asia expert Wendy Cutler questions "when consumers may see these tariff cuts in the store," while Stella Yifan Xie, a correspondent for Nikkei Asia, says that despite the apparent progress, "Washington and Beijing remain deeply divided."

Mortgage rates exceed 7%, pressuring prices

The housing market isn't helping America's affordability woes. In order to offload homes in an otherwise stagnant market, sellers started lowering prices even before the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage reached 7.03% on Thursday. Last month, sellers slashed prices on nearly one in five homes for sale — more than any other month since 2020. Economist Lawrence Yun urges homeowners considering a sale to accept elevated rates as the "new normal." A rate of 7% historically represents a psychological barrier for buyers pushing budgetary limits.

Novo inks $1.3B deal for monthly — or even quarterly — GLP-1 shots

Novo will pay up to $1.3 billion to license technology from Sweden's Nanexa that could significantly change how patients take popular obesity drugs. Under the terms of the deal announced Friday, the Ozempic maker will help develop Nanexa's PharmaShell drug-delivery system — hopefully cutting the number of injections people need to just once a month or even once a quarter. Novo exec Brian Stidsen Vandahl explains, "As patient populations become increasingly diverse, we see value in pursuing different approaches that can help address varying needs, preferences and treatment experiences."

Akamai wins $11.6B Anthropic cloud-computing pact

Cloud-computing company Akamai Technologies has secured a seven-year, $11.6 billion contract with Anthropic, paired with a warrant that could give the AI company up to a 5% equity stake. The agreement will see Akamai provide Anthropic access to central processing units for its data centers, and follows a previous $1.8 billion cloud deal between the companies earlier this year. The equity warrant is the first of its kind for Akamai, but "helps bring the companies together," says CEO and co-founder Tom Leighton.

AMD chip engineer Chitra Barvekar posted on LinkedIn that "strong execution, real demand, and a growing role in the future of AI" helped the company reach the milestone. AMD is the fourth chipmaker to cross the trillion-dollar mark, following Nvidia, Broadcom and Micron.

Oura targets $2.2B in US listing for smart rings

Oura, the Finnish maker of health-tracking smart rings, plans to raise up to $2.2 billion in an initial public offering, according to a Monday filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. An IPO at that price would value the company — which has sold millions of rings and counts over five million paying subscribers — as high as $14.1 billion. Despite growing revenue, Oura's losses surpassed $900 million in the last year. Its Nasdaq listing is seen as a test of investor appetite for wearables.
