Paramount is discussing a settlement with California's attorney general that includes a $1.5 billion investment in the state and a promise not to leave, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing unnamed sources. Multiple states have sued to stop Paramount's $81 billion merger with Warner Bros. If you've been waiting for mortgage rates to drop before buying a house, prepare to wait even longer. Rates are approaching 7% for the first time since January 2025, further slowing a housing market that's already been in suspended animation for years. "[S]eeing a mortgage rate that starts with a seven could be enough to make some buyers reconsider a purchase they were already stretching to make," notes economist Thomas J. Thompson. Plus, wage growth is slow, and home prices now sit around 60% higher than pre-pandemic, compounding the stressors for potential buyers.

Senate blocks crypto-industry-backed Clarity Act bill
The Senate on Tuesday blocked legislation to overhaul the regulatory framework for cryptocurrency markets, marking a major setback for the digital asset industry. The 50-49 vote halted the Clarity Act, which aimed to bolster anti-money laundering measures and split oversight between the Securities Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. The House passed the bill last year, but it has repeatedly stalled in the Senate. The setback sent Bitcoin down as much as 5%, while shares of Coinbase and Circle sank more than 10%.

Starbucks tries to build buzz with viral Snoopy cup
Starbucks is trying to rebuild buzz and boost foot traffic by offering another viral cup — this time a limited-edition Snoopy glass that's already reselling for five times its $40 purchase price. The cup, part of a larger Peanuts merchandise launch that began at select stores Tuesday, depicts the iconic cartoon dog wearing a Starbucks-green scarf and orange beanie. While some customers lined up at 2 a.m. to successfully snag a cup, others lamented the fact that cups quickly sold out and weren't available at all Starbucks locations.
